Sioux Indian Wins South Dakota Suit
A Sioux Indian, John Fire, backed by government lawyers, won a federal hearing over claims that Indian Town residents lack municipal services compared with white areas. Judge Andrew Bogue set June 1 for a preliminary hearing. Mayor Paw Blomstrom and eight officials face the case alleging discriminatory electricity, sewage, and street payments. Fire argues that paved streets and sewers exist in the uphill section but not in Indian Town, where residents face substandard infrastructure and flooding. The city plans to form a planning commission and housing authority to address issues.

Shell Dredging Permit Changes Proposed In Senate
The bill would require dredgers to prove applications will not harm proposed sites and would move burden of proof to the dredger. A subcommittee of the Parks and Wildlife Committee will study Senate Bill 664 with three Texas members named to decide its fate. Opposed by shell dredging firms, but backed by ecology groups and the Texas Antiquities Commission, the measure faces uncertain passage before the session adjourns.
