James and his jitney pioneers of Bay Area transport
A Bay Area Heritage Society Family Tree Cookbook collection reveals early transportation stories. Leslie James started a 1920s jitney taxi and later rented trailers and Model A Fords, while running a nearby body shop. He and son Truvy created a dairy near East James and Highway 146 and stayed outspoken about property value. The volume also chronicles Hungarian immigrant Joe Moskowitz and Polish-born Blanche Lowenberg, who helped found Grand Leader 2 in Baytown, and recalls Ern est C. McMaster who joined Humble Oil at Baytown Refinery and played with Houston ensembles. Wanda Orton, Baytown Sun former managing editor, is noted.
