Budget Study In October Firemen Hours Under Review
Baytown officials plan next October budget studies to reexamine fireman hours after council condemned the current 72 hour week as absurd. The issue arose during a regular meeting when Ansley and Huron urged shifting to 40 or 60 hour platoons, while Mayor Clayton asked about tax implications. Dispatchers now work 40 hours, with firemen at 72, a change made two years ago under a state law.

Laos Faces Red-Led Break in Northwest Front
In Vientiane and across the Mekong, pro Communist Pathet Lao forces surged through northwest Laos driving back Royal Army units. Houei Sai fell after a five hour battle as government troops retreated into Thailand and the outlook for a neutralist government grew uncertain amid U.S. hopes for a halt. The advance, backed by the Soviet Union, North Vietnam and Red China, overran Nam Tha and threatened a wider collapse.
