Freight rail shows way for Texas infrastructure investment
Texas leaders should look to freight rail as a model for smart investment and deregulation. The Texas transit system spans over 10 500 miles with 52 railroads moving 2.1 million carloads yearly, and potential growth to double by 2040 per Texas A&M Transportation Institute. Freight rail’s deregulated era spurred $630 billion in private investment, cutting shipping costs 45 percent and accidents 79 percent. Bob Mitchell of Bay Area Houston Economic Partnership notes rail success supports jobs and economy as ASCE grades rail at B nationally.
