Baytown police identified two men suspected of armed robberies occurring in the early hours Tuesday and Wednesday. In the first incident a 51 year old man in the 3400 block of Indian Trail said a man approached his pickup, asked for a cigarette and a second suspect then brandished a gun. The case continues on page 3.
A Baytown man Ollie Ford Jr. was charged with sexual assault Tuesday in connection with a November 17 rape of a 33 year old Baytown woman. Detective Edgar Elizondo said the victim reported being grabbed from behind near Lee Drive and West Nazro and forcibly assaulted. Evidence led to Ford's identification in February and he was jailed in May for an unrelated burglary. Ford denied involvement, but the District Attorney's Office says evidence supports the charge.
Lee College schedules two commencement rallies at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the Sports Arena with over 150 graduates in each ceremony. State Rep. Mary Ann Perez will deliver the keynote, representing House District 144 including Baytown and nearby areas. A live stream and DVD options will be available. A nursing program Pinning Ceremony follows at 7 p.m. in the Sports Arena with about 61 graduates.
Baytown’s two day Fourth of July celebration at Bicentennial Park features Kansas performing July 3 at 8 p.m. and Montgomery Gentry on July 4 at 8 p.m. Local talent Ryan Guidry and Breelan Angel open July 3, with 4 Barrel Ramblers also on the bill. The free event includes a parade, vendors, kids area, and a fireworks show.
Voters in Chambers County and northeast Harris County vote Saturday to fill the District 4 state senate seat after Tommy Williams resignation. Across Mont Belvieu and Anahuac, residents cast ballots for mayor, council, and school board posts as unopposed incumbents and several challengers contend. Early totals show 2,644 ballots in Harris County and 632 in Chambers County with potential runoff if no majority emerged.
Voters should use the American Legion Hall for precincts 1 2 3 6 9 and 14 the West Annex on Eagle Drive for precincts 4 and 10 and Beach City for precinct 5 see vote page 3 for details.
The National Association of Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive on Saturday. Baytown residents should place non-perishable donations at their mailbox for pickup by city and rural carriers. Donated items go to Baytown food pantries via Baytown Resource and Assistance Center, Love INC, and United Way partners, including Bay Area Homeless Services. Last year Baytown collected 16,160 pounds.
