Decision Due Today On State's Spending Bill
Legislative leaders weigh a one-year tax relief spending bill that could clash with Gov. Preston Smith. House Speaker Gus Mutscher and Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes seek to raise teacher pay with no new taxes, while Smith questions the constitutionality of any plan shorter than a two-year appropriation. A House Tax Committee meeting was planned to decide on the two-year route if chosen.
