In Oklahoma City officials report Governor John says he began smoking and received retirement recognition for anti smoking efforts. Lykes Steamer Rams Reef Off Florida Coast
The SS James S. Lykes struck a reef about 709 miles off the Florida coast and was aground near Manzanilla reef in the Little Bahama banks. A tug was en route to aid as the Coast Guard reported the vessel was southbound from Norway with cargo for Mobile, Alabama.

Extinct Bird Found Hidden in Chicago Museum Dust
Chicago Natural History Museum received a rare stuffed New Zealand bird, extinct about 40 years. Birds Curator Austin Ly Rand said it was tucked in a dusty taxidermy shop corner and had long been sought. Officials are unsure how it remained concealed since the 1890s. District Attorney Adams of Jasper resigns effective June 1. Governor Allan Shivers announced the resignation affecting the first judicial district comprising Jasper, Newton, Sabine and San Augustine counties.

Army Career Begins Again For Contino Chid
Contino Chid a 22 year old musician who had served a federal prison sentence for draft evasion began a second Army career. He was inducted as a private for a 24 month hitch and sent to Fort Ord California for basic training. Previously drafted over four years ago he fled induction then surrendered and served four and a half months at McNeil Island penitentiary.
