Flying saucer maiden flight ends with burn out
John R. Mitchell admitted his first full size flying saucer attempt failed after about 150 feet in altitude and burning out near the ground on a test in Virginia west of Dulles Airport. His 48 inch device melted at the edge of the heat and he blamed using the wrong materials. Mitchell still believes saucers could replace airplanes for passenger transport and warfare and said an oilman from Lubbock showed interest in financing a 20 foot diameter full sized saucer carrying three or four people.
