Baytown Police Chief Johnny Wilkins announces support for American Bike Month as cyclists seek exercise recreation and transportation. The Baytown Sun notes rising bicycle use in recent years and the broader national observance.
The Mont Belvieu council voted to appoint Davis as mayor pro tem after a lengthy meeting. Officials discussed sewer projects, park improvements, and pipeline permits, approving repairs at the treatment plant and a new chlorinator. Citizens were urged to supervise children near traffic and bicycles with safety rules from the Bicycle Manufacturers Association.

Sherry Kay Phipps of Ross Sterling and Renda Murph of Robert E. Lee won Baytown Education Association 3259 scholarships for students headed to college. Phipps plans English and art study at Lee College and SWT University. Murph will major in elementary education at Midwestern University.
Baytown police report a suspect in custody after a Q1-year-old woman was raped at about 2:30 am in an apartment parking lot. The assailant forced her into his car, took her purse and keys, then released her. Police later arrested him at a nearby apartment. charges were expected to be filed Wednesday.
Funeral services for Norman Gerald Similes, 20, of 3314 Loreaine Baytown, will be held Thursday at Late Raprise Church in VeNair with Rev Henry Thomas officiating. Burial follows at Memory Gardens in Beytown. Survived by mother Mrs Mary Low Barksdale of Baytown, father Norman G Smiles of New Mexico, six sisters including Monica Patilla and Hernadine Yacuy, one brother Adophus Barksdale, stepsister Brenda Barksdale, stepfather Husenead Barksdale, and grandmother Mrs Mary Smiles. Arrangements by Johnson and Frasier Funeral Home.
The Hill County School Board contracted Perry and Hurst of Houston to design renovations for the existing elementary building to become a middle school. Superintendent Bill Farmer said classes begin August 1 with the 1978 79 year. Work includes restroom renovations a laboratory conversion and library restructuring. Aluminum window replacements are planned due to inflation.
