Robert E. Lee High School Spanish Club hosted Iluminado Nuestra Cultura with about 200 attendees in the auditorium. Students from San Jacinto and Carver elementary joined, as perform ers delivered a varied program featuring the Star Spangled Banner, Tejano and Latin songs, and dances including Cumbia and Merengue.

Harris County records show child fatalities rose 7.7 percent in 2000-2001 with 639 deaths in 2001. Motor vehicle injuries were the leading cause, blacks up 10.9 percent, Hispanics 8.6 percent, and Asian plus Native American deaths up 41 percent. Males totaled 378 deaths in 2001, females 261. A task force is planned to address preventable deaths, focusing on injuries and improved prenatal care, amid homicide rate shifts among ethnic groups.
