AF Chief Sees Need For Manned Bombers And Aircraft
Washington AP Gen John P McConnell Air Force chief of staff says there is a continuing need for manned bombers and other aircraft. He warns against making missiles a status symbol and supports keeping proven manned systems while pursuing newer, faster aircraft like the F111 SR71 and C141 with B52 replacements debated for the 1970s. First SR71 bomber variant flights begin later this year with F111 deliveries in the next year.
