Harlingen State TB Hospital cuts confinement stay
Harlingen state tuberculosis hospital in Cameron County has halved average patient stays from 300 to 170 days since 1956, enabling closure of two of seven units. The 35-acre campus, cost $2.3 million to build and $1.4 million yearly to operate, runs an outpatient clinic network expanding to other Texas hospitals. Superintendent Dr. Enrique Trapp oversees 300 patients and notes a Latin American to Anglo ratio of about 95 to 1 as poverty and crowded housing fuel TB, while stressing early detection and community rehabilitation.
