Leaders say Ike taking more action on his own
Washington reports Republican leaders say President Eisenhower is increasing independent action as his term nears end. They note a rising nonpartisan stance in appointments, veto threats against Democratic spending, and a no compromise approach toward Congress. Redevelopment Bill Heads Toward Expected Veto Vote
Washington AP The House approved a 251 million dollar redevelopment measure after nine hours of debate, moving the bill closer to an anticipated presidential veto. The 251-184 roll call split saw 178 Democrats and 23 Republicans in support, 69 Democrats and 115 Republicans opposed. The vote fell short of the two-thirds needed to override a veto. House supporters, led by Rep. Wright Patman, expect Senate acceptance over a conference fight. The bill, designed to aid urban and rural areas with loans and grants, totals 3894 million in related measures considered in the Senate, with clashes over funding and committee procedures preceding passage.
