Insurance firms moving into repair loan field
Insurance companies are expanding into home repair and modernization lending by offering to insure lenders against losses on government backed repair loans. Private insurers seek to compete with FHA by providing optional coverage with conditions that borrowers not be forced to buy and that costs not be rolled into the loan. Some see this as expanding private credit, potentially reducing FHA risk and stimulating private lending, while Congress weighs extending FHA repair loan insurance for five more years amid existing program restrictions.
