Trapped Airman Wins A Footrace
Saigon AP reports U S Air Force Captain James M. Ingalls of Palo Alto Calif outran Communist pursuers in North Viet Nam mountains Sunday night. Rescue helicopters recovered him at dawn after three failed late Sunday attempts. Ingalls parachuted into the mountains after his forward air control Skyraider was shot down near the North Viet Nam Laos border. He was the 48th pilot rescued by the 3rd Aerospace Rescue Recovery Group since January 1 and 120 downed pilots were saved in the last three months of 1969. What began as a radio beacon led to a cliff base where two Sikorsky helicopters directed him down the slope amid unseen ground fire. The helicopter crew watched as hidden runners opened fire from a hidden position.
