Opponents Present Case Against City Sales Tax
Arguments against city sales tax claim it is unfair and regressive, hitting low earners hardest. They warn exemptions for food medicine and clothes may be removed, reducing reliability. They contend the tax shifts costs to consumers and applies to essentials like clothing bedding school supplies and meals in dining establishments. Rental property owners pass ad valorem costs to renters, and future legislatures could end exemptions. The tax would tax all purchases over 17 cents, with a 3 percent rate, affecting Baytown residents before the April 2 election.
