Ambulance Subsidy Fight Moves To City Hall

Baytown council hears a proposal from Allen Cale of the Superior Ambulance Service Co to operate Baytown ambulances without city subsidy. Cale, planning service in Baytown Pasadena and La Porte, says he can staff and equip within 60 days and would pay drivers about 300 dollars monthly. The ambulance study committee reported Louisville municipal operation experiences and urged careful planning, but no recommendation was made pending a Friday conference with the Houston operator.

CYO Doughnuts Sale After Sunday Masses

The CYO will sell coffee and doughnuts after the 5 30 am, 7 30 am, and 9 20 am Masses on Sunday. Stolen Boats Reported In Cedar Bay Area

Two boats valued at 40 dollars each disappeared from Cedar Bay near J B Baker at 1908 Kilgore Road. An eight foot green aluminum pram and a gray boat were the stolen craft. Minor injuries reported when Roxie Ed ward Johnson struck a parked car on Sterling Street. Program cancelled at Lee College due to cast illness Thor Yuan Rowlette Jr. Firefighters battled a Baytown house blaze at 2142 Montana. A Chevrolet pickup in 510 Williams was found to be stolen. Damage to Woodlawn disposal plant chlorine tank estimated at 38 dollars.

Delegates Gather for 22nd PTA Conference in Baytown

About 800 delegates are expected April 4 and 5 in Baytown for the 22nd District Texas PTA Conference. Mrs. L. L. Ledger of Copperas Cove will be state president and guest speaker. The 22nd district includes 257 PTA units and 124,253 members. Baytown’s committees include general chairwoman Mrs. W. Paul Bolk and assistants, plus officials handling registration, information, publicity, tickets, music, stage, and ceremonies. Dudley Huckabee leads opening ceremonies, with hostesses and ushers named. Bruins Dovis will arrange exhibits as local PTA members meet in the Baytown Junior School gym.

Sugar Mischief Reported in Crosby Pickup

Daniel W. Blackford of Crosby reported to Baytown police that Thursday while his pickup was parked at the Kmart lot someone poured sugar in the gas tank. Officers found about half of a five pound sack of sugar in the truck’s rear upon investigation.

Doc Severinsen to headline REL Band concert at 7 30 pm

Doc Severinsen will horn with the REL Symphonic Band at Robert E Lee High School auditorium Friday at 7 30 pm. About 200 tickets remain at the door for the concert featuring Concerto For Trumpet and Portrait of a Trumpet plus classical and jazz selections. Severinsen, famed for versatility on the horn, drew a 10 minute ovation at a Band Masters Convention in San Antonio last year.

Big Remodeling Pact Ok'd In Channelview

Channelview independent district school board awarded a 640481 contract to Clark Z Tullis Construction Co for additions expansions and remodeling of junior and senior high schools. The 26 day completion would allow Dec 1 1967 opening. The bid was the lowest of six ranging to 692900 and part of a 1117900 building program from a 21 million bond issue voted last June. One member opposed due to remodeling timing concerns for September start. The board also set May 2 for high school commencement in the football stadium due to auditorium limits.

Shell to Build Multimillion Ethylene Plant in Texas

Shell Chemical Co. said it will erect a new multimillion dollar ethylene facility near Houston at Shell's Geer Park works with completion expected by mid 1965. Ethylene, a petroleum derivative, is used to make antifreeze, synthetic rubber and plastics. Norman Hooten, reporting a gunman fired on him along a country road, says he does not necessarily tie the incident to his forthcoming book on Kennedy’s Dallas assassination.

License Bind After Midnight Saturday In Texas

Baytown and Houston officials warn old vehicle license plates will expire at midnight Friday with no penalties for using old tags until April 11. Sgt John Rogers says grace period has always applied and DPS will not ticket until after midnight. Deputy tax assessor says 2100 plates sold so far and Friday is expected to be heaviest traffic day.

Light turnout eyed in school board election race

Voters will choose between James Slick Ellis and Don Wynnemer for Position 3 and Champ Crawford and Troy Peterson for Position 4 in a month long campaign. About 5,000 ballots are expected one thousand fewer than last year’s 6,500. Polls open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 13 boxes with results to be reported from the School Administration Building.

Mont Belvieu Election Set For Tuesday

Mont Belvieu residents will vote Tuesday April 4 to elect three city aldermen. Incumbents Fred Chity Earl Porter and D E Williams seek re election. Balloting is at the Mont Belvieu sub courthouse from 7 a m to 7 p m with Mrs Ursula Sturrock serving as election judge.
