GCM freshman Alex Haymon, a 5-10 guard, averaged 9.4 points and six rebounds per game for Goose Creek Memorial. She earned Newcomer of the Year honors in District 21-6A and The Baytown Sun All-Area team, crediting goals set with her father Jamaal Haymon for focus.
Barbers Hill junior Charli Collier headlines the 2017 Baytown Sun MVP list after leading the Lady Eagles with 23.9 points and 10 rebounds per game. She earned two All-State selections, District 21-5A MVP, and Gatorade Texas Player of the Year while committing to UConn and aiming to improve as she has one year of eligibility left.
The 2017 All-Area list honors Charli Collier Barbers Hill as MVP and Jayelin Gray Dayton Player of the Year with Logan Keene Barbers Hill and Alex Haymon Goose Creek Memorial also earning top honors. Coaches, first and second teams, and honorable mentions feature stars from Barbers Hill, Goose Creek Memorial, Sterling, Dayton, Crosby, and Lee among others.
Sports calendar lists Girls Soccer playoffs with GCM hosting Clear Falls at Deer Park at 6 p.m. and North Shore visiting GCM at 7 p.m. Barbers Hill plays Lee at 5 p.m. Kingwood at Sterling 7 p.m. Crosby at Kingwood Park 6 p.m. Hope Softball features GCM at Summer Creek 6 p.m. plus Humble at Lee 6 p.m. Sterling at North Shore 6 p.m. Barbers Hill at Kingwood Park 6:15 p.m. Porter at Crosby 6:15 p.m. Track includes GCM Lee Sterling at Rockhold Relays. Boys golf fields Lee GCM at Barbers Hill and other area events.
Danley, with 589 wins and 155 losses over 20 plus years, led Barbers Hill to a 34-5 season and state tournament berth earning The Baytown Sun Coach of the Year honor. He credits his players for the success and notes his teams often reach deep playoff runs. All-American Charli Collier helped pace the playoff push as Danley emphasized yearly adjustments.
Barbers Hill seniors Kayla Konarik and Charli Collier earned All-State honors from the Texas Girls Coaches Association with junior Charli Collier also on the All-State list from TAPPS and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Dayton standouts Tavelin Grays Lauren Cumberbatch Elizabeth Newport and others earned Academic All-State distinctions along with coach Kit Martin named 6A Coach of the Year.
Dayton girls basketball, led by junior guard Tavelin Grays, posted a 31-6 season and reached the bi district after a standout run and top five 5A ranking. Grays scored a career high 40 in the playoff loss to Beaumont Central despite illness, earning Baytown Sun Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Lo Gan Keene, Barbers Hill point guard and state tournament cornerstone, earned Defensive Player of the Year honors after guiding the Lady Eagles to the state event. She averaged 3.8 assists and 3.5 steals per game, helped by a lockdown defensive style, and spoke of aiming to improve scoring next season while embracing leadership duties.
