Funny Car racer Scott Kalitta visits Baytown seeking a rebound after years since his lone Funny Car title in 1989. Kalitta aims to perform strong at the Baytown event, highlighting his long career and past triumph in the series.
With Tuesday’s baseball and softball games washed out by rain, Sterling Lee and Barbers Hill teams will play today, transferring action to the diamond as organizers adjust the schedule and venues.

Baytown Housing Authority members adopted a Monday resolution mandating board approval for any transfers between the authority's entities. The move follows a March 31 HUD deadline amid a Department of Housing and Urban Development debarment push against executive director Bill Eiland after an Office of Inspector General audit found improper transfer of HUD funds to nonprofit entities. The BHA runs four HUD housing projects, a Section 8 program, and several non HUD nonprofits.
Congress members who represent Baytown split on immigration reform as Senate debate opens on a more lenient bill for an estimated 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants. Demonstrators nationwide oppose the House version that would make undocumented entry a felony. Rep Gene Green of the 29th District includes western Baytown.
AP reports thousands of Texas high school students walked out for a second day to support immigrants as Congress debates new immigration law. A student suffered a severed hand in a traffic crash while traveling to the rally in a car driven by an unlicensed teen. Yadira Ortiz, 18, remained in fair condition at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Anahuac Chambers County Judge Jimmy Sylvia appointed Pct 3 Commissioner Buddy Irby to fill his vacancy until a new commissioner is elected in November. Irby, who plans to resign March 31 2006 for personal and health reasons, agreed to continue serving as interim commissioner. A special election will determine the remainder of Irby’s term ending 2008, with Republican Gary Nelson and Jim Farmer in a primary runoff to face Democrat Cecil Parker in November.
Baytown gears up as the American Cancer Society drives a Bay Area Relay for Life effort. Local volunteer Pat Thomas leads community involvement to fight cancer, sharing how the disease has touched her family with a sister survivor and a cousin who battled it.
The pending contract with T-Mobile would place towers on city property with the city owning the land and T-Mobile owning and maintaining the towers. Deputy City Manager Bob Leiper says the plan could reduce dropped calls, boost city revenue from land leases, and allow city radio and Internet broadcasting gear on the towers improving police radio communications and patrol car computers. The height of towers would affect signal quality.
