Superintendents Skeptical In School Finance Overhaul
Texas superintendents including Chester Juroska of Alvarado and Annette Griffin of Carrollton argue over funding as they sue the state for more education money. They oppose sin tax funding but may accept cigarette tax gains if part of a broader package. Districts favor ending Robin Hood redistributions to boost local education funding amid looming court hearings.

Trial Begins In Laney Insanity Defense Case In Tyler
Texas psychiatric experts for both sides agree Deanna Laney was legally insane last Mothers Day weekend when she used rocks to bludgeon two sons to death and injure a third. Eighty jurors were sworn and sequestered as the capital murder case opens in Smith County Court. Laney, 39, homeschooled in New Chapel Hill, called 911 saying God ordered her to do it. Two boys, 8 and 6, were found dead. 14-month-old Aaron survived. Her husband and family support her, while prosecutors will seek conviction without death penalty and argue she knew right from wrong. The judge ordered no comment by attorneys.
