School Board Meeting Hears Contracts For Gym And Shops
The School Board will meet Friday at 4 20 p m to consider awarding contracts for constructing a new gymnasium and vocational shops at Robert E Lee High School and for a conference with consultant Dr E V Huffstutler in the search for a new superintendent to succeed George Gentry. Bids on the new construction were opened Tuesday. Coffee for Abe Simon, candidate for city council District 2, will be held Sunday 2 to 5 p m at White Hall recreation center 2300 Taft. A League of Women Voters rally is set for 7 30 p m Friday in city council chambers with 14 candidates invited to speak. The city election is Tuesday. Crosby School Board approved a new one year contract for Tax Assessor-Collector Guy Emanis beginning June 1, with salary 9000 plus 600 travel, up from 8350 plus travel. Christian and Missionary Alliance Church hosts its first missionary convention this week with a Friday 7 30 p m program featuring Rev Larry Bell of Indonesia and Mrs Milton Brown of Ecuador. Cary Vollmer, 57, former Humble employee, died March 24 in Kingsville. He served Humble 1935 to 1955, was a Mason and WWII veteran. funeral at Epiphany Episcopal Church with burial in Chamberlain Cemetery.

Eisenhower Dies After Long Fight at 78
Dwight D. Eisenhower former World War II commander and former president died at 12:25 p.m. EST at Walter Reed Army Hospital after a long battle with heart failure and complications from surgery and pneumonia. Brig. Gen. Frederic Hughes Jr. announced the death and noted Mamie Eisenhower and immediate family were present. President Nixon and former Presidents Johnson were notified. The 78 year old five star general had suffered a series of heart problems and pneumonia following a February surgery for an intestinal obstruction and prior heart attacks endured since a California heart attack last April.
