Port official Guenther named to new role at Port of Houston
Port Commission appointed 53 year old Guenther to lead the Port of Houston Authority succeeding Col. Leonard Waterworth. He outlined the port’s history since 1914 and its role in facilitating commerce and jobs while noting plans to deepen Barbours Cut and Bayport channels for Panama Canal expansion and to handle larger ships. The discussion touched on the recent oil spill near the Houston Ship Channel and ongoing cleanup efforts by the Coast Guard.

West Bay seeks rezoning to general commercial for Cedar Bayou yard
West Bay Fabrication Park asks Baytown for zoning change to general commercial to use Cedar Bayou for shipping and a lay down yard while preserving a 200 foot buffer and 40 percent natural vegetation. City staff now favors general commercial with buffer rules, aiding outdoor storage and community protection. FCBU prefers Cedar Bayou banks stay natural but would accept industry with a good neighbor record. Public hearings on annexation of 28.2 acres for Kroger Marketplace development, a 170000 square foot retail project, and traffic improvements along Garth Road accompany the rezoning discussion.
