Tax scam targets Southeast Texans warning issued
The Texas Attorney General's Office details an ongoing investigation into Syam Tax Services LLC which allegedly recruited in East Texas churches and senior centers to obtain victims personal data and file fraudulent tax returns for refundable credits. The scheme targeted elderly Social Security recipients in Lufkin Beaumont and Port Arthur, diverting roughly half the refunds to Syam and leaving victims liable for penalties and interest. The office seeks to shut down the fraud, recover profits, and warns Texans to verify tax preparers credentials and filings before signing.
