Fire Officer Here Dies At Age 30
Baytown fire Lt Ethridge 30 died in a Houston hospital after an illness that followed hip surgery months ago. Services at Wilkinson Funeral Home are pending. Ethridge, son of Baytown builder BL W Athridge, served in the Navy, attended Lee College, worked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Service, and was a noted outdoor enthusiast and cave explorer. He joined the Baytown Fire Department in 1968, rising to lieutenant, and lived with his family near the new Massey Tompkins Road station.

Baytown voters face a slow campaign with seven candidates for mayor and three council seats. The Baytown League of Women Voters will host a Meet Your Candidates rally at city hall Tuesday at 7 30 PM led by Mrs Pal Mann and David Walker. Incumbent Jody R Lander has no opponent in District 3 while Collin Teague battles Mayor Tom Gentry. Howard Leap and Emmett Hallo contest Districts 2 and 1 respectively with Mary Elizabeth Wilbanks in District 6 facing Russell Bond. Absentee voting ends Tuesday with 30 ballots cast. council canvass set for April 11.

Members sew, write letters, run errands, and visit patients, wearing colorful hats and snappy vests to lift spirits. The group, formed in 1957 with about 18 members, plans a bake sale to raise funds.
