Stocks surge on economic growth signals rally optimism
New York markets climbed as a solid reading on the economy boosted confidence. The Dow rose 170.59 points to 16218.82, the Nasdaq up 3 percent, and the S&P 500 higher as traders weighed whether the gain marks a durable upturn or a temporary rebound amid a nine week correction. The GDP for late 2003 was revised to 4.1 percent, while unemployment claims edged up to 339,000, tempering enthusiasm and keeping analysts cautious about sustainability.
