Crash Victims Services Held in Baytown Area

Funeral services were held for 16 year old George Middleton and his aunt Elmira Epperson Scott after a pickup truck failed to negotiate a curve on Sjolander Road near Archer Road about 25 miles northeast of Baytown. Both victims died at a Baytown hospital. Highway Patrolman Royce Wilson said there were no skid marks, suggesting the driver did not see the curve. Middleton survived by his parents and two sisters. Scott left a husband and four sisters and two brothers. Burial for Middleton was at White Cemetery. Scott at Cedavcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers were family members and local residents.

House-To-House Leukemia Fund Drive II

Residents in Baytown and La Porte areas participate in a door to door leukemia fund drive Tuesday from 6 to 9 30 p m. Volunteers numbered 476 will canvass the region aiding leukemia patients and families. Donations collected at Citizens National Bank after 6 p m will be counted by Leukemia Society volunteers and Baytown Reserve police.

Humble OCAW Talks To Resume At Plant

The Oil, Chemical and Atomic Workers Union and Humble Oi and Refining Co officials will return to the bargaining table at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the plant to continue contract talks begun in January. Union chairman J. T. Dickerson said union requests for more job security remain unfulfilled as members rejected Humble's counterproposal last week. The main issue is Humble contracting maintenance and construction work that could be handled with company equipment or by OCAW, and opposition to outsiders doing work eligible for OCAW. The old contract is extended three days to 4 p.m. Monday, April 9, with federal mediator James C. Hubbard attending the Wednesday session.

Saturday Deadline For Buying Vehicle Tags

The Baytown office of the Harris County Tax Assessor Collector will stay open until 5 p.m. Saturday for Baytown residents to buy 1962 license plates. Deputy A B Dmn said the Saturday hours are extended due to the plate deadline, with about 20 000 residents still needing to purchase plates before the deadline.

State Department Grant Sends LC Instructor to Spain

Bruce Hanson of Lee College will study in Spain under a State Department grant for six weeks at the University of Valladolid and Burgos. The program supports travel and tuition as part of the Finland culture act to broaden language and cultural knowledge. Hanson holds two music degrees and will pursue further training at Juilliard School of Music while in Spain.

Nephew of Mrs Winnie Brown Dies in Bryan

Ronnie Robert, a 12 year old from Robert E. Lee High School, died Saturday after a blood disorder. He had been treated at Methodist Hospital for months and died during a baseball tournament in Baytown while his family attended a Bryant Association event. Survivors include his parents Mr and Mrs Bob Robert, two sisters and several relatives. Funeral rites were held Monday at Milling Tier Chapel in Bryan with burial in Bryan City Weenmoor. The Baytown game finished 12 to 6 against Beaumont.

Groundbreaking set for four lane highway on Spencer Highway

About 100 residents and officials from Texas City Kemah Beabrook Morgan Point La Porte and Baytown gathered at Highway 146 and Spencer Highway at 1 am Monday to break ground on a 796482 four lane divided highway from Spencer Highway to the traffic interchanges south of the timetable. County Commissioners W V Hed Ramsey Kyle Chapman and La Porte Mayor Harold F Pfeiffer opened the project with first shovels of dirt. Afterward the Texas Highway Department district engineer Wiley Carmichael and La Porte Bayshore Chamber of Commerce president John S Klibler Jr joined a luncheon hosted by Highway 146 Association chairman Fred Hartman and Carmichael.
