China faces new food import rules threatening trade
Leaders from major trading partners seek to avert a plan to require certificates from foreign inspectors on all food consignments entering China. The rule targets items from wine to chocolate and is slated to start as soon as October, risking disruptions to billions in commerce. Critics say the measure protects Chinese producers and adds regulatory burden amid Beijing’s pledge to cut red tape. Codex Alimentarius guidance is cited, while officials debate alternatives and timing. The Codex head will join an April seminar to explain standards to Chinese officials.
