After a uneven season the Leelanders earned a postseason soccer playoff berth for the first time in over ten years marking a notable upturn for the program.
All-District 21-5A honors named Audri Garcia of Sterling as the top defensive player in a vote by district basketball coaches. Several other RSL and REL players were also recognized for their performances this season.
Sterling High School students host a powder puff football game Sunday at the RSS field to raise funds for Project Graduation, inviting community support and school participation.
Longtime Baytown resident Mike Wilson a senior vice president at Amegy Bank will chair the 2007 08 campaign for United Way of Baytown Area guiding fundraising efforts and community programs through the year.
The community mourns the deaths of Wayne Mumper Brian Blackshear Aubrey Shaw Jessie Ezell Thelma Rhodes Debbie Foster Jesse Estrada Julia Guerra and Richard Frazier. Authorities have not released further details at this time. Community services and memorial arrangements are pending.

Former mayor Calvin Mundinger, chair of the Cedar Bayou Intermodal Task Force, updated council on the evolving Cedar Bayou saga. State Rep. Wayne Smith introduced House Bill 3158.
Lee College regents approve a 50 percent tuition reduction for high school students taking dual credit courses, while maintaining the full fees. The plan covers up to eight credit hours and applies to current arrangements where HS students paid full tuition. The proposal passed unanimously on Thursday.
Baytown residents line the piers as the Nifia replica of Christopher Columbus ships in for a two week docking in Bayou La Batre Alabama. Captain Morgan Sanger says the 16 year voyage to 42 states and 600 ports has educated students and sparked awe among hundreds of visitors daily. The ship’s crew live below deck in the hold and the vessel features a raised deck and lifeboat modeled after the 15th century voyage. See Nina page 3.
Defense blindsided as prosecutors seek more time to review the case after a guilty plea to a lesser charge. Lauren Nichole Timmons, 22, faces potential refiled intoxication manslaughter if the district attorney pursues the more serious count. A jury trial was postponed as a vehicular homicide team re-examines evidence in the April 29 crash that killed Jorge Alberto Mendoza, 22.
A crowd in Anahuac gathered at White's Park for the Anahuac Area Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet to honor community helpers, with tickets selling well and proceeds around five thousand dollars. Residents praised the event for fellowship as winners including the 2007 Person of the Year were celebrated amid a magician, auctions and local support.
