Lewis C. of La Porte survived a high speed crash on Highway M6 near La Porte, his car grazing a second vehicle on a curve. Eight year old Donald Dixon of La Porte was injured Saturday on Main Street when he ran into a car driven by William Kling. Kling, 22, said he was traveling about a mile per hour. Donald was treated at Dr Robert Browns office and then at Pasadena hospital for observation and X ray. He was released Sunday morning. No charges were filed against the driver.
Baytown area writers may enter a creative writing contest offered by David Arnett of Arnett Insurance. Separate divisions for feature articles short stories and poetry total $150 with no age limit. Entries limited to two features two short stories and up to five poems with requirements on length format and submission. Deadline April 4 2000 with reception May 18 at Lee College. Judges to be announced later.

Washington March 23 UP Shocked Senate investigators promised Monday to probe Gen James A Van Fleet bitter charge that the U S Army lacked enough ammunition to meet a Communist offensive in Korea The subcommittee plans public hearings late this week with Van Fleet as first witness and an announcement on detailed plans within a day or two Army Chief of Staff Gen J Lawton Collins said ammunition in the Far East was not as large as desired but improving and that the Eighth Army had enough shells to protect its troops and carry out operations

Eight Black men charged with gaming and liquor law violations after a Baytown investigation by Lt Sasa Warfield and Tom McPhaul. Raids at Idle Bour cafe and Welcome Inn recovered cash, liquor, cards, dice, and a croupier stick. Rawlins and Spencer face charges for illegal possession and gambling on beer licensed premises. Rawlins may face a felony count with possible license suspension if convicted.
Sapet's lawyers plan a quick appeal after a jury found the mustachioed Latin American defendant guilty on the second of three counts in the Jacob Floyd murder case. Floyd, a 22 year old University of Texas student, was shot in his Alice driveway last September. The trial, moved on venue grounds, drew a packed courtroom and spectators along walls and outside corridors.
Good weather sped Crosby's school building program as Superintendent G O Dusek reported foundations being laid for two new buildings and interior work underway on a third. Foundations for the Negro multi purpose building and the cafeteria auditorium near the high school were nearly ready with pouring due soon. Exterior work on the elementary school neared completion with interior work beginning. Completion hoped within three weeks. cafeteria project priced at 46000 and Negro school building cost exceeding 296000.
VEW to install officers from three VFW posts and auxiliaries in April at VEW hall on Decker Drive. Officers elects include W C Moravits as commander and many staff positions. Past Queens and auxiliaries list complete with officers and delegates. A free dance will follow the installation as part of the events.
Funeral services for Mrs. Miner va Measies of Seabrook were planned for 2 p.m. Monday at the Assembly of God church in Seabrook with Rev. J. B. Linney officiating. Mrs. Measie died in a Houston hospital Saturday at age 75 after 1914 residence in Seabrook and longtime Harris County residency. Funeral arrangements were handled by the Art Simpson funeral home.

Five persons died after a highway crash 18 miles northwest of Austin Sunday night. Victims identified include Ellis Ebert Preece 38 Thelma Preece 14 Loretta Preece 14 and Robert G Trowbridge 22 an enlisted man at Bergstrom Air Force Base. Injured were Bessie Preece 16 Sgt Virgil Preece 36 and Floyd Fuston 22 all listed in critical condition. Justice of the Peace Robin Forrester released identifications.
