City Issues Warrants To Buy Landfill Site

City council approved issuing 90 000 in time warrants to buy 65.5 acres off Cedar Bayou Lynchburg Road for a sanitary landfill. Land cost about 1 500 per acre, purchased from Milton Stewart trustee, outside city limits in a never developed subdivision. Underwood Neuhaus will manage warrants with aim to convert to bonds under five percent interest, 30-year term adjustable when converted.

Supt Gentry marks 23 years in the school system

Supt George H Gentry quietly marks his 23rd year in the local school system with the anniversary observed on Friday. Multiple community members are noted for birthdays family events and local happenings including Lee Entler and Debbie Johnson both turning 18 and Mrs Pearl Morse becoming a grandmother twice within an hour. Joan Johnson Honored by State Senate in Texas

Baytown nurse Joan Johnson was honored by a Senate Resolution introduced by Sen. Chet Brooks. The recognition cites her dedicated service to nursing and civic groups, leadership of East Harris County projects, and 26 years with Harris County public health. She organized the first Future Nurses Club at Robert E. Lee High School and recently received the Baytown Community Service Award. Johnson served on national and state committees, including the National League board for the Baytown Cerebral Palsy Center, the Baywhore Center for Mental Health and Retardation advisory council, and the Tuberculosis Society board, and helped form the East Harris County Nurses Association. She is a graduate of Abilene Christian College with a nursing degree from UT Medical Center.

SBA to End Stay April 4 in Baytown Office

The Small Business Administration announced it will close its Baytown loan office on April 4 after the Baytown Chamber of Commerce site aided flood relief. With loan applications plunging, SBA official Malcolm Bridges said regional offices in Houston will handle remaining cases and assist those unable to file. He praised Baytown leaders and the Red Cross for cooperation and space.

LeFevre Named Acting Baytown City Manager

J B LeFevre was named acting city manager as the Baytown council seeks a permanent replacement for Fritz Lanham who resigns to lead Governor Preston Smiths community relations office. Lanham leaves Tuesday after five and a half years as manager. LeFevre has a long Baytown tenure including finance director since 1958 and prior stints as city manager 1959 to 1963 and December 1956 start as chief accountant. The salary remains unchanged at 12360 and a council committee led by Lamar Kelley handles the search.

Major Reform of Texas Liquor Laws Okayed

Texas lawmakers approve a major overhaul of liquor laws after a brief debate. The bill tightens underage drinking penalties and dealer sanctions, linking tax considerations to spending plans and awaiting Gov. Preston Smith's signature to take effect August 31.

Medals Cite Valor of Late Baytown Soldier

U S Army Specialist Four Noe Tameyoza of Baytown was killed on duty in Vietnam on November 2. He posthumously received the Silver Star Purple Heart and Air Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters. His parents received the medals. The Silver Star citation notes his exceptionally valorous actions as an observer on an OH-6A helicopter, exposing himself to heavy fire to mark targets and suppress enemy fire, aiding gunships and helping locate bunkers before he was fatally wounded.

Killeen Mayor Adams Dies From Gunshot Wound

Justice of the Peace Edward Turmter ruled that Killeen mayor R. C. Adams died Thursday from a self stated personal safety related gunshot wound after a police investigation. In Houston, police said two men robbed the South Park National Bank today and escaped with an undetermined amount of cash.

Humble Enjay settle biggest wage pact at one oil site

Gulf Coast Industrial Workers Union ratified a three year contract covering about 2,000 Humble Oil and Enjay Chemical workers in Baytown. The pact raises wages and benefits by 33.1 million, creates a one rate structure, and provides a 4.5 percent general hike effective Jan 1 1970 with a $3.17 to $4.61 prime rate. Training cuts and improved work practices accompany the deal, with immediate $700,000 in bonuses and retroactive pay to Feb 17.

1969 Science Fair Set Saturday At Sterling

The 1969 Baytown Science Fair will be held Saturday at Ross Sterling High School. Judges will select winners from 93 projects with some advancing to the Houston Science Fair on March 24. Awards will be presented at 5 p.m. in the school auditorium. The public may attend from 2 to 5 p.m. Showcases include junior, ninth grade, and senior divisions with demos in chemistry and physics and 28 local businessmen judging on criteria.

Optimists Plan 15th Birthday Weekend Fete

Baytown Evening Optimist Club marks its 15th birthday and Optimist International's 50th anniversary with a two day observance. An open house starts at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Baytown Optimist Building on Market Street. District governor Blaine D. Esmond will speak at the Founders Day and Ladies Night gathering at 7 p.m. Monday at the club building where the Optimist of the Year will be announced. Elbert Barringer is club president.
