Taxpayer offers compromise case shows complexity
The government reduced a Michigan backing firm executive William Bridge’s tax bill by $493,298 to $372,000, after he claimed assets totaling only $26,768. The settlement, part of 10,000 offers in compromise last year, relied on future earnings and asset transfers. Bridge, 51, heads Baker Driveaway Co. and links to several family firms. IRS details show lifestyle and corporate control, with payments slated as six annual installments.

Kennedy and McCarthy stir 1968 race shift
Lyndon Johnson faces a new challenge as Robert Kennedy pivots from support to opposition in the 1968 Democratic race. Kennedy, long allied with Johnson, now signals a possible run amid McCarthy momentum in New Hampshire and rising Vietnam concerns.
