U S Troops to Get Lightweight Rifle in Vietnam
Thousands of U S infantry and other troops in South Vietnam will swap heavier long range rifles for the lighter M16 to boost short range firepower. About 100000 more M16s are being made to replace 44 rifles and to supply South Vietnam and South Korean troops. The change, requested by General Westmoreland, aims to improve tactical effectiveness by increasing firepower at short ranges. The M16 weighs about four pounds less than the M14 when loaded and has faster muzzle velocity, though its maximum range is shorter. Military and defense officials described the shift as essential due to jungle combat conditions.
