The Baytown area is forecast to stay clear through Saturday with colder air arriving Friday night. Temperatures Friday should range from 43 to 78 degrees, following Thursday’s 71 degree high.
Ralph Kunz continues Heart Fund checks while Howell’s neighbor helps in a jam. Lowell Lam mers conducts two litre checks across the channel. Baytonians greet former Gander star Gerald Orton as Joe Butrick plans ahead. Norman D’Olive joins Bumble research. Mrs Lillie Robbing lends a hand. J R Geasling schedules extra square dancing on Saturday. Marian Felkner arrives early to assist a photographer and grab a soft drink. Virginia Carter anticipates weekend excitement. Ray Spearrums operates a taxi service with courtesy.
Harry W Ferguson, who began his Humble career in Baytown in 1924 as a chemical engineering graduate from the University of Michigan, will retire May 1. He has served as executive vice president and director, with Randall Meyer elected a director upon Ferguson’s retirement. Ferguson joined Humble in 1928 and helped lead company growth.
Baytown officials prepare for the 1967 City Science Fair awards event at Sterling High School with ceremonies led by Arthur Hodges. Top prizes include a $2 cash award and $15 runner-up in the junior and high school divisions. Baytown’s Andy Braswell and Seaborn Cravey will present keys to the city. The Scientist of the Year honors go to a joint award by the Society of Professional Chemists and Engineers. Judging starts at 8 a.m. and the display is open 2 to 5 p.m. with the ceremony following.
Shrine parade marshal Dave Sherron reports 75 entries by 2 30 p m Saturday with still time to register. Entries range from antique cars to four modern marching bands. Shriners will ride in to kick off a talent show and a week of events. No political bankers or favors for spectators. The parade runs from Thomas Circle along Texas to Third Street and disbands. Streets along the route close to traffic. A reviewing stand will serve city county and Shrine officials at Commerce and Texas.
President Johnson told Congress he is delaying his proposal to merge the Commerce and Labor departments. He remains convinced the departments should be merged but says further active development is necessary before submission.
Associated Press survey shows at least 39 states may adopt daylight saving time this year with Hawaii opting to stay on standard time. Michigan appears certain to exempt itself as several states debate bills to remain on standard time while others push for daylight time.
Dean A Andrews Jr a 44 year old assistant district attorney in Jefferson Parish was indicted for perjury by a parish grand jury in New Orleans as part of the Kennedy assassination probe. He testified under oath that he knew were false statements related to matters under investigation and said he would not change his account.
Dr. Howard R. B. Dudgeon Jr. of Waco urged doctors at the Ninth District Medical Conference to education patients about Medicare. He warned against treating Medicare like a credit card and noted many elderly do not grasp the program. Hospital strains and rising aged care were discussed, with calls for better patient explanation and local hospital control. Other talks covered emphysema contraceptive devices tests calc fractures and coronary care units.
Baytown Optimists plan a 13th birthday celebration at the Tower starting with a steak dinner at 7 pm Saturday. Lt Gov Mike Coman, District Governor Bill Baker, and International VP T C Parker are among expected attendees, with the Octagon Club charter ceremony and the “Optimist of the Year” honor to be announced. Organizers include Steele McDonald chairing the food, Elbert Barringer on arrangements, and Don Stacey handling reservations.
PRINCETON N J March 5 Industry must take the initiative to begin local programs to combat water pollution. M A Wright president of the Chamber of Commerce of the U S, and Humble Oil executive, told Princeton University officials that industry should lead the pollution fight while shaping practical, affordable goals. He warned that without voluntary abatement programs federal regulation would tighten. Wright urged administration at the lowest government level and called for public education on pollution costs. He emphasized conservation research and local officials cooperation.
In New York AP report Attorney Henry Williams warns Powell could spark public disorder if Sheriff arrests the former Harlem representative as he plans a Sunday return to preach at Abyssinian Baptist Church. Williams says Sabbath arrests are civil offenses and disputes the legality of an arrest order amid a defamation suit in Harlem.
Otis Birch reports the death of 95 year old multimillionaire in Dallas amid rumors of a marriage to an ex convict. Harris County tax assessor Carl Smith wins commission approval to spend up to 5900 to probe irregularities in voter registration. Dr Richard Setzer, 44, named president of Lamar Tech by the board of regents.
Harve Henry Ox, 51, of 3945 Crosby-Cedar Beyou Road, Baytown, died Thursday while attending his brother-in-law Qury Davis's funeral in Hearne. Huebert L. Box of Franklin suffered a heart attack at the same funeral and is in critical condition in Hearne. Ox had lived in Baytown 30 years and worked as a carpenter at Enjeay Chemical Co. Baytown Plant. Funeral services are set for 10 a.m. Saturday at Cedar Bayou Baptist Church with Rev. E. R. Burns and burial follows at Henry Prairie Cemetery in Franklin at 2 p.m. Saturday. Arrangements are by Earthman Funeral Home. Three sisters are listed: Carrie Harter of Marlin, A Hein, and (incomplete).
