EPA repairs cap on San Jacinto waste pits amid cancer concerns
A dive team found a roughly 25 by 22 foot trapezoidal damage on the armored cap installed in 2011 to cover 15 acres of the San Jacinto River waste pits. EPA repaired the hole but has not determined the damage’s cause. The pits, linked to Champion Paper Mill, contain PCBs and dioxins and were designated a Superfund site in 2008. Elevated cancer cases were found in eastern Harris County near the pits, including childhood eye and brain cancers and cervical cancer. Long-term cleanup is planned with an EPA remedy to be announced later this year.
