BERKELEY Calif AP veteran physicist Dr Arthur H Compton 69 former chair of physics at Washington University and UC professor at large died from a cerebral hemorrhage after a period of illness. He helped lead the first nuclear chain reaction and the development of the atomic bomb sharing the 1927 Nobel Prize for X ray studies. He was born in Wooster Ohio Sept 10 1892 and later taught at Chicago and Princeton before administrative posts. He helped form the National Academy of Sciences committee on atomic energy and directed work on plutonium and the atomic program. He had planned seminars at UC campuses and had recovered from a 1958 vascular incident. The report notes his wide influence in physics and education.
