Houston racer Nigel Bates dies in Astrodome Grand Prix
Bulletin reports midget racer Nigel Bates, 23, from San Jose, California, died after his Winkelman Amec Special crashed during a practice run at the Astrodome. U S Steel to Build Five Metal Buildings at Baytown Site
U S Steel Corp awards a contract exceeding 1 million dollars for five pre engineered metal buildings at its 13,000 acre Baytown site. Houston based Construction Coordinator Inc. is general contractor with Kirby Building Systems supplying structures. Don Tomasco is the architect. The complex includes an admin building, a large clinic and labs, a central computer center, and facilities for 1,200 wash and locker users. Two buildings support the plant’s rolling mill, docks, trucking and rail yards. The plate mill, first production facility, is under construction and will employ about 700 people with year end completion targeted.
