Washington dispatch reports President Johnson condemned the brutality against Negroes in Selma Alabama as Civil Rights marches intensified. He urged calm lawful action and asked leaders to pursue rights through peaceful means while Justice Department seeks court rulings to permit demonstrations and voting registration.
The first annual Fine Arts Festival at Robert E. Lee High School will feature art exhibits and performances from about 100 students. Activities include an art exhibit in the student Commons from 5:30 to 8 p.m., a one-set play in the auditorium, and various musical ensembles. Admission is 1 dollar for adults and 3 cents for students. proceeds support fine arts at REL.
The school board unanimously approved a resolution opposing Gov. Connally's proposed public schools legislation. Trustees cited a $338,601 rise in district costs and a higher tax burden, urging local action and sending copies to Harris County lawmakers.

Viet Cong forces from the north attacked the Kan Mai outpost near Mang Yang Pass in central Vietnam, overrunning two smaller posts. Government officers said at least 100 enemy were killed. weapons including recoilless rifles and a Soviet designed rifle were captured. A U S Army Special Forces team and families of defenders endured heavy fighting with 400 Viet Cong trapped inside.
In Selma Alabama a massive Negro march toward Montgomery was halted by U S District Judge Frank M Johnson and state troopers under Gov George Wallace. Troopers blocked the procession and dispersed marchers with clubs and tear gas while ministers from across the country arrived to join the protest. The scene echoed the 1963 University of Alabama stand as authorities prepared for potential new demonstrations.
Hill reads a board statement defending the district policy on politics by school employees. Sam Alford challenged legality, but attorney Bruce Ramsey says the policy on academic freedom does not conflict with state statute. A school board meeting approved a resolution commending Sherman Childres for Harris Canary’s outstanding school bus driver of 1965. Childres, with over 20 years as a Baytown driver and Latin teacher at Robert E. Lee High School, has a flawless accident record. The award was announced at a county school administrators meeting at San Jacinto College.
The school board may discuss Mrs. Jones reassignment in a secret meeting Monday night. Board president Stark suggested delaying until the business office systems study finishes March 23, while two board members urged action informed by acting Supt Hinson’s directive and a prior motion.
Dr Edward Teller conducted a Friday seminar at the Esso Research Center of Atomic Energy and Fusion Research. Teller represented the University of California and discussed applied research pricing and related topics.
