Savannah Georgia Granny Peoples, longtime Baytown hotel operator and colorful early oil field figure, died at 8 p.m. Monday at age 83. She lived in Baytown since 1916, ran Peoples Hotel until 1939, and witnessed Goose Creek’s rise to Baytown. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. at Earthman Chapel with Rev. Milton Jordan officiating. burial in Cedarcrest Cemetery. Six grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

East Harris Pioneer Dies After Long Shipping Career
Thad Magee, longtime East Harris County resident and pioneer after replacing sailboats with a Jitney line, died last night at his Highlands home. He helped operate the early Cedar Bayou to Galveston and Houston routes, built the Dolphin schooner, and later ran a Goose Creek Oil Field Jitney line before turning to farming. His wife Mary Galliteaux Magee died in 1949. Survived by daughter Anastasia Greenwood.

Jury Convicts Coplon and Gubitchev in Espionage Case
A federal court jury in New York convicted Judith Coplon and Valentin Gubitchev on three counts of a four count espionage conspiracy indictment.
