Crosby High School evacuated after mercury scare
A Harris County HAZ MAT team was dispatched to Crosby High School after a student spilled about a half pint of mercury in a foreign language class. Officials said no one suffered mercury poisoning. The spill prompted early dismissal and air conditioning shutdown to prevent vapors from spreading. Parents were notified via the school system’s alert service, with updates at 8:47 a.m. and 10:17 a.m.

Health and EMS director license renewed after lapse
The Texas Department of State Health Services says the Baytown Health and EMS director's registered sanitarian license is up to date and renewals are not due until February 2010. Mike Lester renewed his expired license weeks before invalidation, following a Baytown City Council presentation by Angela Barton alleging lapse by him and others. City Manager Garry Brumback said the investigation found Lester the only one with a failing renewal. Lester noted the renewal delay did not affect department actions and welcomed Barton raising the issue. Both Brumback and Lester said new steps will ensure timely renewals in the future.
