Thought for Today by William Dean Howells
A compact aphorism reflects on human nature as creatures of the moment living in small spaces with a single present interest shaping our focus and actions. The quote attributes a concise, panoramic view of shifting attention to fleeting spaces.

City shelter to refund dog adoptions over distemper outbreak
Letters will go to owners who adopted a dog Jan 1 to Feb 20 and to those who returned a dog showing distemper symptoms. Full $50 refunds offered to adopters who euthanized due to distemper, or opt to adopt another animal for free when adoptions resume. Merial donates 600 distemper vaccine doses worth about $900, enabling staff training and vaccination, while experts warn vaccines may not fully prevent infection. Distemper outbreaks are severe but not limited to the shelter, with cats at the facility not susceptible. Adoption and euthanasia records show 16 dogs euthanized for distemper between late Jan and mid-Feb.
