The article chronicles Jeff Hamilton, a 13 year old enslaved boy sold from Trinity County who became Sam Houston’s personal assistant and friend. Hamilton’s life intersects with Texas history from 1853 through Houston’s governorship and beyond, including aid during peril at the Capitol and a 1936 dedication marking his enduring legacy.
