Safety Day unites Baytown police and church in event

Baytown Police Department and St. John's United Methodist Church hosted Safety Day. The event featured community collaboration and demonstrations as attendees enjoyed partly sunny skies with a high near 93 and a low around 74.

Council approves 320 acre annex for church campus

Baytown City Council unanimously approves annexation of a 320 acre area south of Interstate 10 and largely west of North Main to serve the Second Baptist Church campus. Teen earns Youth of the Month amid council praise

Ignacio J. Ramirez Jr. received a standing ovation from City Council after being named Youth of the Month. A Sterling High graduate, he ranked eighth in his class, and contributed to National Honor Society, marching band, jazz band, swing choir, Meistersingers, Student Council and the track team.

New Holy Family parish breaks ground for 1.5 million community center

After Sunday service at Holy Family Parish in McNair the congregation gathered behind the sanctuary to mark the groundbreaking of a 9200 square foot community building. The $1.5 million project aims to open in early 2009 after an eight month construction period led by Zenith Construction. Rev. Rodney Armstrong described the center as a long awaited centerpiece for the Black Catholic community and local residents praised the plans as a place for all ages to gather and fellowship.

Baytown Radio Group Joins National Field Day Effort

About a dozen Baytown Area Amateur Radio Club members gathered at the Baytown Emergency Operations Center for a national field day. They used a trailer from the Chambers County Office of Emergency Management and linked with operators across nearly all states including Hawaii. Ken Hall noted their setup enabled unique access during the event.

Plants win Caring for Texas awards for community service

ExxonMobil Plastics Plant in Mont Belvieu and Chevron Phillips Cedar Bayou Plant in Baytown were honored by the Texas Chemical Council for community and environmental contributions. The awards reflect voluntary industry efforts to improve air quality reduce energy use and promote recycling, with 60 submissions from about 90 companies across the state.
