Harris County Hospital District to hold public budget hearing

The Harris County Hospital District Board will hold a 7:30 p.m. public hearing Monday to discuss the revised budget. The budget will again be discussed at the Harris County Commissioners Court meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday. Taxpayers Association meets 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at 1300 N Main for property tax increase notices. Gulf Coast Gun Club meets 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sterling Municipal Library. Second Baptist Church shows mission vacation Bible school slides at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday during prayer service.

Senate approves postal reform with anti pornography clause

The Senate advanced a postal reorganization bill with strict anti pornography provisions. It rejected House language and set votes on key provisions, while a possible clash over union shop rules looms. Highlands Water Bond Vote Set For July 25

Harris County Water Control and Improvement Board No 1 calls a 1.34 million bond election for Saturday July 25 the third bond issue in a year. Voters previously rejected a 1.08 million bond. Water rates rise in advance of bond payments and system maintenance. The district cites water quality permit deficiencies and seeks a revision to allow up to 1.5 million gallons per day during rain. Proposals include a sewage plant, lines, lift stations, a 750 gpm well, 300000 gal storage, and transmission lines with a 33 1 3 percent federal grant under Public Law 660. Absentee voting starts July 6.

Highlands Man Wins Two Vietnam Awards

Pfc. Roger Williamson, foster son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Geringer Sr. of 805 Oak, Highlands, received the Purple Heart and Army Commendation Medal with V device for actions on January 12, 1970 at Landing Zone Sherry. He is a former Ross Sterling High School student and served 11 months in Vietnam, stationed in Ban Me Thuot. Williamson is the son of Mrs. Esther Chauvis of Baytown and J. C. Williamson of Highlands.

Baytown VFW to Place Flags for Independence Day

Baytown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No 1192 will place American flags along Highway 146 from the Baytown La Porte Tunnel to Interstate 10 and on Decker Drive to Four Corners. The program, supported by Baytown Highlands businessmen, marks July 4 with flag services. Retail stores to close Saturday for the holiday. banks and post offices also closed. Williamson Reinstated With Back Pay by Baytown Panel

Baytown Civil Service Commission ordered Patrolman Kendal M Williamson reinstated with back pay after denying his indefinite suspension. The three member panel ruled the discipline amounted to a three day suspension. Williamson had been relieved May 29 after leaving his car and radio for 10 15 minutes to deliver doughnuts. The chief had recommended firing. city officials defended the process amid civil service objections raised by attorney Thomas D McManus.

County Adds Family Planning Services

Harris County public health services will add a federally funded family planning program with a 3 to 1 grant match of 214,431 federal dollars to 71,524.81 from the county. David Castle says the service, including pre-natal clinics, should start in Baytown within two months after training and hiring begin.

City Enforces Firework Laws For July 4 Vigilance

Baytown police and firemen will enforce city ordinances and state laws regulating fire works use possession and sale during the holiday. The maximum fine is 200. Turner recalls a Christmas blaze caused by a bottle racket from a home on Jones Road. State law limits sale to June 24 to July 4 and bars sales to those under 10. penalties include up to 1000 fine or one year in jail.

W T Busch of Baytown was re elected to the Texas Good Roads Association board at the Austin annual meeting on June 23. A former First National Bank president, he chairs the Baytown Chamber of Commerce highway committee and helped push major projects such as Interstate 10 High 146 the Baytown La Porte Tunnel Decker Drive and Tri City Beach Road. He led the Interstate 10 inauguration in February 1959 and has worked on road interests since the 1920s serving as district chairman since 1968 for State Senatorial District 7.
