Stocks mixed end turbulent quarter on Wall Street
On Friday stocks closed mixed as a tough quarter ended. The Dow fell 26.66 to 9243.26, extending a weekly decline, while the Nasdaq rose 5.78 to 1464.98 and the S&P slipped 0.82 to 989.82. Investors shrugged off Xerox woes and a consumer spending drop as a colonoscopy announcement loomed.

Moody's Downgrades Dynegy to Junk Status in Debt Alarm
Moody's Investors Service cut Dynegy Inc to junk status citing over 8 billion dollars in debt and doubts about funding a restructuring plan. The plan relies on asset sales including a 50 percent stake in Northern Natural Gas, a unit spinoff, and dividend cuts to raise at least 2 billion dollars amid weak markets and tighter cash flow outlook for 2002. ChevronTexaco holds 26.5 percent of Dynegy and may receive sale proceeds, while Enron’s failed buyback options and past investments color the funding outlook. Analysts view the downgrade as expected and largely price-driven, with cautious investor sentiment and broad market weakness following accounting scandals.

Oil futures end choppy week with modest gains and mixed fuels
New York oil futures finished a volatile week largely steady with August crude at 26.86 a barrel. July heating oil rose to 67.96 cents per gallon and July gasoline to 79.38 cents as front-months expired. OPEC kept quotas unchanged through Q3, aiding a cautious bullish tilt despite a weak demand backdrop. Norway and Russia to lift export restraints in July, while Mexico advised no increase in Q3 exports. A recovery in U.S. stocks supported prices amid earlier Wall Street jitters from WorldCom. Brent in London rose to 25.58, natural gas at 3.245 per thousand cubic feet.
