Rickover to be recalled as Navy chief nuclear pioneer
In Washington Secretary of the Navy Fred Korth announced Vice Adm. Hyman G. Rickover will be recalled to active duty when he reaches the mandatory retirement age next winter. Rickover, 64, leads the nuclear power division of the Bureau of Ships and recently suffered a heart attack but favors continued service if able. The move follows concerns about delays and misunderstandings hindering atomic submarines and reflects ongoing calls to promote nuclear technology in the Navy. The report also notes an AFL-CIO four-point program to end racial discrimination in construction employment and Sir Robert Menzies plans for an informal Washington visit in July to meet President Kennedy and officials.
