Close Ballot Seen On Welfare Reform Vote
Washington AP reports the House moved toward a decisive vote on a 2400 a year family income floor. The measure, backed by President Nixon and Democratic leaders, survived a 200 to 172 procedural challenge as lawmakers bar substitutes and amendments. Administration sources expect a narrow victory similar to recent margins. Critics label the plan too lenient or coercive in work requirements, while supporters tout 200,000 public service jobs and expanded funding if needed.
