Waves Aim to Reform Image of Bainbridge Waves
At Bainbridge Naval Training Center the Waves seek to shed the stereotype of crass entertainers and present a disciplined image. Lt. Janet Blumberg and Cmdr. Anne Ducey describe recruits aged 18 to 26, college or high school graduates, training to become capable Navy volunteers. About 600 enlistments occur in summer, with half that in winter, amid talks of relocating training to Orlando, Florida. The program emphasizes organization, strict discipline, and rapid uniform dress, as recruits endure ten weeks of boot camp, drills, and uniform fitting.
