Two projects by the Baytown school district and city will pave Stadium Drive and resurface Gentry Drive near Memorial Stadium. Stadium Drive will be widened to 40 feet, curbed, and realigned so the stadium lot traffic flows to Oak Street. Pruett Construction Co. bid $17,200. work to start next week. Gentry Drive will be resurfaced and curbed on at least one side. the district will fund north side curbs and gutters. The city may have curbs on the south side if the railroad agrees. Intersections at Stadium Drive Gentry Drive Oak Street to be improved, possibly requiring utility pole moves. Phase II bids anticipated mid July. completion planned for fall before the 1965-68 term.
Lee College trustees approved three new MDTA staff positions including a radio and television repair instructor and a welding instructor, while reemploying several existing staff. Resignations were accepted from Elizabeth Carpenter, Arthur Harrington, and Rupy Swenson. Betty Burt was hired to replace Carpenter. The board also added a third counselor and a nursing instructor, with salary details deferred. A cafeteria building at the Technical Branch will be used for food service to serve about 120 students, replacing sandwich racks.George H. Gentry explained resignations reasons and noted reassignment of roles within the MDTA program.
The Harris Insurance Board weighs a 13.4 percent car rate increase with proposed policy changes for private passenger autos not used for business. Laytown's Jimmie Dodd of Liam Houston State repeats his top form for a third straight year, earning a place on the NAIA baseball all tournament team. The report notes his continued impact in the event and his continued selection amid increased competition.
Supt. George Gentry said he will recommend the district participate in the federal school lunch program and study all aid programs with Lee College to determine funds available. The board approved the study and possible staff assignment to prepare requests for reimbursement and handle aid details. A report is planned for the next regular meeting, with hopes of completing the study by July 32.
A fundraising drive is organized to help Billy Pena Sanchez 15 who died in a car crash at Decker Drive and Schoppa Lane in Baytown. His family, already affected by a December fire, lost all belongings. Donations may be mailed to Earl Lively Box 673 Baytown. Funeral held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Sanchez survived by parents, four brothers and nine sisters. He died when his car left the road likely due to sleepiness. This marks Baytown’s fourth traffic fatality this year.
The Texas Landsman real estate magazine will feature Bayshore area including Baytown La Porte Seabrook NASA area Bayport Clear Lake City and assay. Luke H Miller president of the Bay Area Board of Realtors announced. Realtors meet Friday at noon at Angels Grill in La Porte to hear Vincent Schmitt explain the restaurant plan. Each member must promote his Bay area segment with a Bay Area Board of Realtors business meeting to follow and a constitution correction planned for the session.
The Bry shore Rod Reel and Gon Ciph sponsorship hosts the annual kid fishing contest with only one entry so far. Chief weigh-in and recording man Sint Nelson notes prizes of 10, 7.5 and 5 dollars with July August awards for Jane, July and August. Jack Chance saw 15 kids at Neel son's store. a youngster handed Nelson a dollar to prize the smallest fish caught with hook and line, eligibility set at under 14.
About fifteen hundred Baytown area residents attended Sunday night church outreach at Robert E. Lee High School auditorium. An estimated 1.7 hundred were present for May Day night sessions led by evangelist Jimmy Allen of Searcy Arkansas. Programs started at 8 p.m.
