Houston firm to make bridge steel for Fred Hartman span
Combs Industries of Houston chosen to fabricate bridge steel for the Fred Hartman Bridge while a foreign company is expected to supply roughly 4,000 tons of steel. Williams and Traylor Brothers hold the main contract, with subcontracts to be awarded in six to twelve months as crews drive pilings and towers begin in September. The nearly two mile long eight lane bridge on Highway 146 will connect Baytown and La Porte, with a center span of 1,250 feet making it the longest cable stayed span in the country. The Baytown-La Porte Tunnel will be removed after completion and the ship channel deepened from 40 to 60 feet.

Crosby trustees split on single member voting plan
Five of seven Crosby trustees opposed changing to single member districts last February and would not reconsider at the May 18 meeting. They argue the district is small and contention would polarize the community, though some favor public vote and minority representation and others note low turnout. The superintendent says demographics could justify future consideration amid a growing Newport area.
