Visit Highlights Sundown Island Bird Sanctuary
The author visits Sundown Island in Matagorda Bay near Port O'Connor, home to 70 acres managed by Audubon warden Chester Smith since 1986. The island hosts over 20 breeding bird species including brown pelicans and terns, with thousands of nests. Looming oil spills threaten Gulf coast sanctuaries, potentially endangering nesting success and future repopulation.
